Tulips in Your Home Garden

You have many options available to you come time to plant your home garden. The preferred spring garden flower for most people is the tulip. You can find tulips that will come up in early spring, mid-spring, and late spring. In some parts of the world you can even find them in the middle of the winter. It all depends upon the climate and conditions in which you live. One rule is universal, however, and that is the fact that you have to plant them after the ground reaches a temperature below 60 degrees. This is different than you would if you were planting a vegetable garden or other plants.

The reason why you need to plant your tulips in the fall is because they will not grow if you plant them in the spring. That is because the tulip is made in such as way that it needs to sit for at least a few months before it grows. This is true for most varieties. You can order your tulips off-season sometimes, depending upon where you live, and whether you order them fresh, potted, or in bulbs. However, this article mostly represents tulips planted during the times of the year they were meant to be grown in.

Most tulips will do better if you live in the climate zones 4 through 7. However, it is possible to also grow certain varieties in zones 8 through 10. The exact dates in which you would plant them before winter will vary depending upon which zone you live in as well. For example, if you live in colder climates you can start planting your tulips starting in September to October. The warmer the climate is the later you will be able to plant your tulips. In fact, you need to make sure you do not plant them in too warm or too dry of a ground if you expect them to come up year after year.

When you plant your tulips you need to make sure that you water them enough so that they will be able to take root during the winter. This is very important, otherwise they may only grow plentiful one year and then spars or not at all. Ideally, you would want your tulip garden to be raised in a way so that excess water drains away from your flower garden. Although tulips need water, they do not need too much water. Watering tulips too much is just as harmful as not watering them enough.

In order to ensure that your tulips receive enough light in the spring you need to plant them in a well lit area, preferably in a sandy, yet fertile soil. However, you would need a light amount of shade for your tulips as well. That will help them remain chilled during the harsh months of winter. The other important part to remember is that you need to make sure that your bulbs are planted deep enough. If you don't plant them at least 6 inches from the surface you may lose them in the rain or snow as it washes away the top layer of soil, or melts.
