Proper Plant Care for the Growing Season

It is very important that you take proper care of your tulips during the tulip season. Proper tulip care includes planting them deep enough beforehand, choosing the right bulbs, and then watering them properly afterwards. Not only that, but you need to know how to prune them for the following year.

If you are choosing bulbs to plant you need to pick ones with no mold or foul smell, and to choose the largest sizes of each variety of tulips you are planting. When you plant them you need to make sure you plant them with the pointed end up, and plant them 6 inches deep. After planting you must water them thoroughly so they properly take root, and you should also feed them enough nutrients.

You do not necessarily need to fertilize your plants immediately after planting.  However, the best time would be before the flowers bloom. Slow release fertilizer, or fertilizer high in nitrogen is the best for your newly growing plants. You can also insulate them with a mulch to protect them from cold during the winter (after ground is frozen already, preferably) and from the heat in the summer.

After the flowers have reached their prime, you can cut them for use in bouquets, but you should leave the foliage behind. This dead plant substance will help provide growth for the following year.

Another important factor of plant care needed in your tulip garden during and after growth is to make sure you control your garden’s weed population. The best time to eliminate weeds is before they reach more than an inch high (or even smaller if possible) otherwise the weeds will grow out of control. They have been known to grow ten fold if not plucked right from the root as soon as they come up.

You can use a small shovel, your bare hand, or even a hoe to help chop or did weeds out from your garden plant. Keep in mind if you use a hoe that the weeds are more likely to grow back than if you remove them with your bare hand or with a shovel. Again, if you pull them out or dig them out, they will be less likely to return than if you just chop them off with a hoe.

You can also use a powered weed eater to remove unwanted wild garden plants as well. However, this method is very similar to hoeing. If you use a weed eater, you may have to weed your garden more often than if you had just removed the weeds by hand.

You can find other substances to help protect your tulip garden during growing season as well. For instance you can find both organic and commercial substances that you can use for deterring wild animals or insects from invading your tulip patch. Tulip care in the spring is important. You will need to check the safety standards of the products you use, however. You would want to make sure that the pesticides or other killers would not be harmful to children or pets.
